An Andalusian company, leader in biosafety solutions at international level with more than 20 years of experience in the sector, has required the services of J. Huesa to adapt the tap water of its new factory located in Seville, as a co-formulant in its phytosanitary products.

In view of the main project target, the Technical Department of J. Huesa has decided to design, install, and set up a plant of water demineralization.

The parameters taken into account for the design of the plant are as follows:

Treatment line:

Raw water goes through a filtration system, consisting of a mesh filter followed by an active carbon filter, in which suspended solids and hypochlorite in are retained.  This filter is equipped with an automatic valve that backwashes the carbon load.

The next equipment in the treatment line is a water softener where the salinity of the water will be removed (mainly calcium and magnesium). The demineraliser is designed to treat a flow rate of 1 m3/h.

The demineralisation process consists of removing the ions present in the water using cationic and anionic ion exchange resins, contained respectively in two columns.

In SERVICE conditions, the water goes through CATIONIC column where cations are exchanged for H ions and then goes through the ANIONIC column where anions are exchanged for OH anions, obtaining a high purity DEMINERALISED water.

The quality of the water obtained is measured by a conductivity probe, located at the outlet of the 2nd column. If the water quality is higher than the value programmed in the SET-POINT, the controller will open the SERVICE solenoid valve and the equipment will operate normally.

The resins will gradually become saturated until the water quality is lower than desired. When this happens, the programmer will close the service solenoid and the regeneration process will start.

The regeneration process consists of passing hydrochloric acid through the cationic resin, and sodium hydroxide through the anionic resin. These regenerants displace the retained ions, replacing them with H+ and OH-, respectively.

The entire installation is controlled by a control panel with microprocessor.

The demineralised water is stored in a GRP tank installed outside the treatment room.  A pump recirculates water from the tank, passing through an ultraviolet lamp.

The UV system is a system based on primary water disinfection without the use of chemicals This unit is controlled by its own microprocessor.
