Maghreb’s leading company in tomatoes, strawberry, and berries, has trusted J. Huesa Water Technology to provide a comprehensive solution to improve irrigation performance with the addition of fertilizers for berries plantations (especially blueberries and raspberries). In this case, a desalination treatment system has been established using reverse osmosis, the main alternative to traditional resources, given the scarcity of water in the area.

Desalinated waters by reverse osmosis present physicochemical characteristics quite different from those of conventional groundwater traditionally used. When several water sources are available (different qualities of groundwater), it is necessary to carry out a comprehensive management of the mixtures that guarantees the sustainability of the system, as well as an effective treatment on it, also applicable to a single source.

In intensive crops, in which the fertigation technique is practiced, water is the base on which the nutritional balance is completed. In this type of farms, the technical team adjusts the fertilizer dose according to the value designed by the manufacturer. Fertilizer contributions are reduced depending on the quality of the irrigation water.

Turnkey project for a leading company in the production of berries in Magreb.

Currently, this client has seen increased production lines, requiring a volume of irrigation water to his farms. In total J. Huesa has responded to this demand with the execution of a EPC project for 4 water treatment lines to service the irrigation supply of the different irrigation farms: 1 for 60 m3 / h, 1 for 42 m3 / h and 2 for 66 m3 / h.

Thanks to the installation of the equipment designed and manufactured by J. Huesa, an outlet water is obtained from the treatment line with a conductivity <50µS/cm2 and of optimum quality that guarantees the improvement of the performance of the fertilizers used.

After studying the analytics of the inlet water (salinity concentration of 1.5 gr / liter), a design of a standard treatment line consisting of reverse osmosis was proposed, after a treatment system made up of a coagulant dosing equipment, hypochlorite dosing, ring filtration with automatic cleaning and turbidex filtration.

Apart from the capacity of each line, being the same quality of water and the same purpose of the product water, a global design of the system has been carried out and it has been adapted to the flow rates required in the different farms. The treatment line accumulates the treated water in a large basin with a capacity of over 14.000 m3.

The reverse osmosis equipment has been designed to obtain a 75% conversion, with a 99% salt removal. To adapt the inlet water to the membranes and increase the efficiency, a pre-treatment has been installed, consisting of:

  • Coagulant Dosage
  • Static mixer
  • Proportional hypochlorite dosage
  • Filtration by rings and automatic cleaning
  • Turbidex filtration with high solids removal charge and automatic cleaning by both differential pressure and finished process time
  • Safety pre-filter 5µm
  • Dosage of chemical products (antifouling and scavenger)
  • Flushing system, which guarantees that the membranes inside the tubes are cleaned automatically periodically or whenever the plant stops.

The installed filtration system is static pressure type with bottles made of treated and painted carbon steel to avoid corrosion. The water is recuperated at the bottom by a plate of nozzle inside. This system is controlled and operated by independent pneumatic valves to increase its efficiency in cleaning the load.

All the treatment lines designed and built by J. Huesa are parameterized and controlled by a central processor unit that governs the different instrumentation and control equipment installed. In this way the equipment is always controlled, and we ensure its correct operation, as well as the control of the relevant automatic cleanings.

On the other hand, the electrical panels for the control of the treatment lines are equipped with remote communication systems so that their operation can be controlled without the need for face-to-face assistance.

J. Huesa, at the forefront of new technologies, is positioned as a reference company in the treatment of water for the irrigation of berries at a national and international level.
