FILTRATION

Physical operation involving the passing of water through a filtering medium with the goal of separating out the fluid from the material that is carried along with it. The filter medium is always either a support or a bed, called support filtration or bed filtration, respectively.

The particles are retained in the filter medium created by the filter element and the fluid is left free of particles. The pore size is directly related to the type and dimensions of the particles that can be separated.

Several external criteria are used to determine the type of filter and filter media that should be used:

  • The characteristics of the fluid to be filtered.
  • The characteristics of the particles to be retained.
  • Possibility of or need for recovery.
  • The desired quality of the filtered fluid.
  • The operating conditions of the facility.
  • The possibilities, efficacy, and type of washing desired.
  • The economic means expected be used for both the facility and its subsequent maintenance.

Filtration allows us to remove both organic and inorganic solids, varying in size according to the porosity of the imposed medium and the effect of the electrical forces produced by the friction of these solids as water passes through the filtering mantle.
